HOW TO SMELL GOOD AT WORK

If I had a dollar for every email I’ve read or conversation I’ve overheard about headache-inducing fragrances in the workplace, I’d be rich.

Now, I know we’ve been conditioned to believe we need perfumes, musks, and colognes to smell good, some of us don’t realize that these fragrances can be olfactory terrorists in the workplace, especially if they are OVERPOWERING AND STINKY…yes, I said it! While our intentions may be pure, many of us become sensory offenders because we don’t know how to pick the right scents or wear fragrances properly in the workplace.

Because there’s an art to wearing fragrances in the workplace and I don’t want you to be a fragrance offender, I’m spilling the beans on how to wear fragrances in the workplace. Here are 3 tips

Tip #1 – Wear scents that work with your body’s natural chemistry

Scents and fragrances vary from person to person because our bodies produce uniquely distinct scents. Our skin type and body temperatures play key roles in how a scent smells. So, when you go shopping for a fragrance, don’t just spray it on a scent card to test it out. Spray it on your wrist and rock the scent for a few hours. That way you can get a better sense of how it actually pairs with your body’s natural chemistry. If you’re feeling patient and serious about securing the right scent, request a sample and wear it daily for a week before purchasing.

Tip #2 – Don’t drench your clothes in your fragrance

Please do not spray fifty-million layers of perfume on your clothes and body. It is not cute! I repeat don’t do it! Because you will smell crazy and people will judge you with their eyes or pretend to sneeze. Speaking from experience – rookie mistake – don’t do it!

So, here’s where you should spray your perfume.

  1. Pulse point of your neck
  2. Pulse point of your wrist
  3. Behind your knees
  4. Optional: If you’re wearing a sleeveless top or dress, between your elbows.

How to make your scent last long?

  1. Use a fragrance-free moisturizer before applying your scent
  2. Apply your scent before putting on your clothes
  3. Apply vaseline over your application sites to lock in the scent
  4. Lightly mist your hair so that when you move people can get a light whiff of your scent.

Tip # 3 – Light floral, fresh, or citrus scents are great for the workplace

Here are some of my favorite go-to fragrances that I love to wear to work and on certain date nights.

Burberry Her | Miss Dior Absolutely Blooming

Chanel Chance | Gucci Bloom Acqua Di Fiori
